The Chameleon Council

A game about attracting/using the right cards on and off the elusive Chameleon Council. Based on parts of the “Scout” card game.

Setup

Each player picks their unique hero card. Also deal each player 8 cards.

Shuffle your cards and then take them into your hand. Because from the moment you pick up your cards, you may not rearrange them anymore.

Objective

The game ends when somebody’s hero is already on the council when their turn starts. In these rules, “council” simply refers to all cards currently faceup on the table.

Count the number of crowns on cards in your score pile. Subtract 1 crown for each card left in your hand. The player with the most points wins.

Gameplay

Take clockwise turns. On your turn, take one action: Bribe, Hire or Activate.

You can use any cards for these actions, except your hero. A player’s hero can only Hire. If a hero were to be removed for whatever reason, it returns to the hand of the owner (at a position of choice).

Bribe

Steal a card from the current council and put it anywhere in your hand. Pay the owner a card of the same value or class.

Hire

Play cards to the council. You can only ever play the outer cards in your hand (left or right edge).

  • For each card played, remove one card from the council that has a lower value. Add it to your facedown score pile.
  • If you play multiple cards, they must all be the same value or class.

Activate

Activate a card on the council, to take their action. Pay the owner a card of the same value or class.

Card rules

Most characters have special rules/exceptions …

  • When adding it
  • When removing it
  • When counting it as a point card
  • When certain pairings, combinations, or groups occur in the council
  • When activated => they do their special action, if they have one

This idea might also be repurposed to be about animals, for example. There’s a hierarchy in the animal kingdom. They are predators, prey, plants, removing each other all the time. Would allow the characters to be actual animals. The chameleon is one of the more powerful and influential cards. Your main character is always a lion or king-like animal.
