Factory of Ideas

This website contains ideas! Some small, some big. Some just a single sentence, some many pages of detailed notes.

All ideas come from a human. There is no AI here, no automated process, no random generation. All ideas are concepts that a human wishes would exist, but don’t execute themselves for whatever reason. That’s why they share it with the world, for free, hoping it gets made.

You’re free to browse and use these ideas however you like, for both personal and commercial projects. You don’t need to ask permission or pay royalties, although credits or donations are always nice.

The Idea Master

This website was created by me, Tiamo Pastoor. My brain is awesome at coming up with ideas. I have hundreds of them a day, spread across many creative fields, and I long ago forged the habit to take each one seriously and write them down neatly.

Unfortunately, I only have limited energy and time. As the years passed, I realized I simply wanted these things to exist … but I would never be able to make all of them myself (for various reasons besides time). I looked at my hard drive and saw thousands of very promising ideas. Let me be clear on that: I’m not giving away my “worst ideas”, I’m sharing basically all my ideas because I can only execute a handful of them myself.

At the same time, nearly every day, I discover others struggling to get ideas. I hear someone say they “want to write a book but can’t find any (good) ideas”. Or I stumble upon an online post asking “I want to get into game development, but all my ideas are too big, does anyone have a tiny idea for me?”

Hopefully, the Factory of Ideas can bridge that gap. I share what I do best—come up with and specify ideas—and others can take them and execute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get in trouble with copyright / plagiarism?

Nope. Ideas can’t be copyrighted, only execution can. Don’t let anyone, person or company, try to tell you otherwise. I’ve made sure to clearly state that I claim no ownership whatsoever on what you decide to make using one of these ideas.

I love to hear and see what others do with my ideas, but it’s not a requirement to tell me ;)

Moreover, you’ll notice just how much the execution matters. I promise you that a thousand people can use exactly the same idea as their starting point and all end up with wildly different end products. Maybe your projects aren’t even in the same general artistic field anymore. If you hadn’t told anyone, they would never know all those different projects started from the same source.

What about the titles or specific terminology of ideas?

Many of my ideas have a clear title that I think is very fitting, which means you might want to copy that directly. This is somewhat dangerous territory, because you probably want your project to have a unique title. This is easily solved though: Google the title. Check if anyone else already used that exact sentence or words. Check if anyone else “claimed” those specifics of the idea.

What is the format of the ideas?

There is none! Some ideas are just tiny brain sparks. Some are a long document with headings and clear documentation that I wrote for myself. Because they were all written by me, though, they’re quite consistent in terms of language and markup used.

For the most part, I write complete sentences with clean and simple language. Because, well, that’s how I make sure I can figure out what I meant when I actually go back to execute the idea. But there might be some ideas that are harder to follow, badly formatted, or use technical terms. I tried to clean it all up, but some things might slip past me.

In any case, the ideas are just text. You can also download the raw Markdown source. Some ideas include images or mood boards or whatever, but those are very rare. Most ideas have a progress rating indicating how good and documented it is.

Pff! Real artists get their own ideas! This website is an abomination!

That’s not a question ;) But yes, this is a common sentiment, mostly from young people who have barely any experience creating or finishing creative projects. Actual real artists know that art is 99% getting inspired by other art. As they say: great artists steal.

Every single project you make is just a mixture of ideas and concepts you’ve stolen from previous experiences. It is not “wrong” to buy an asset pack and use it for your game, it is absolutely the right decision if you don’t have the skill/budget to do all that art yourself. It is not “wrong” to tell yourself you’re going to write a book like Harry Potter, just with some tweaks that you like more. In fact, Harry Potter itself is basically a tweaked version of fantasy novels released a decade earlier.

I propose we all simply do what we’re good at. I am good at coming up with ideas. Others are good at taking ideas and executing them well. I am good at collaborating, building, inventing, experimenting, and sharing. Others are good at marketing and actually turning an idea into a commercially profitable product.

Also, I fully agree that many ideas on here are kind of garbage. That’s the whole point. I did not see enough promise to execute on the idea when I had it. But maybe reading that mediocre idea is necessary to give you a much better one. There’s no harm in publishing the ideas; I’m not forcing anyone to use an idea they think is rubbish.

Can I suggest my own ideas for the database?

Nope, sorry. I could never confirm if I have the right to publicize the idea under the free license under which this website operates. It’s common in every industry for studios and artists to deny all unsolicited “ideas” for that same reason. Additionally, by limiting user input (e.g. comments), this database becomes much cheaper and easier to maintain for free. This might change in the future.

Why are some ideas in Dutch?

I am Dutch! My earliest ideas (before I started at university) are simply all written in Dutch. Some are also tied directly to something in the Netherlands or Dutch culture, so it did not make sense to translate them. This only applies to about 5% of all ideas though, everything else is in English.

Thanks! But I feel bad taking ideas from you.

Don’t be! As this idea factory proves, I have more than enough ideas to last a thousand lifetimes. That’s why I can fearlessly create this project. I know I can find new ideas in five seconds if I ever run out ;)

Where do YOU get your ideas then?

I’ve found this to be a mixture of two things. One is that my brain is just naturally in creative-idea-generation-mode all the time, which is mostly genetics. The other is that I’ve always consciously surrounded myself with a large variety of possible sources, inputs, voices, art forms, etcetera. (Example: I am not subscribed to any specific channel or website and I don’t have a favorite anything. I simply look up different sources myself. I never get stuck in a highly specific algorithm.)

You can only connect concepts in your mind into a new idea if you regularly discover new concepts and perspectives. If your daily environment does not disregard most things at a glance, and you play around with whatever comes your way. It’s a habit, mind-set, and environment you can foster!

I also made this website (just a little bit) to show all neurotypical people just how busy the mind of a hyperactive person can be. The content of this website is only a fraction of a fraction of the ideas racing through my brain every day. Yet when I showed it to neurotypical people, they were immediately overwhelmed by the sheer number of entries. They could not understand how or why you’d get so many ideas, but it seemed like they finally understood a little better how it feels.
