River Regals

A One Paper Game that you play solo / against yourself. Print a random paper, grab a pen and die, and play.

Objective

The game ends as soon as you can’t execute your turn anymore. Calculate your score and check it against the target score(s).

Gameplay

Roll the die. Its number tells you which terrain element to place. Every cell on the map can only be filled once.

Different terrain has different rules about placement and scoring.

Also take into account the rules of existing elements, when you draw something there. These only appear on harder difficulties.

Terminology

  • “Adjacent” always means directly to its left, right, top, or bottom—never diagonally.
  • All adjacent tiles of the same terrain are considered one “group”, which is often important in this game.
    • A group of (adjacent) Trees is called a Forest.
    • A group of (adjacent) Water is called a River.
    • A group of (adjacent) Towns is called a City.
    • A group of (adjacent) Grain is called a Farm.
  • The sun icon around the edge indicates the “Sunlight Direction”. Any tile behind a mountain, on the opposite side of the Sunlight Direction, is said to be “in shadow”.

Map / Paper

A large empty grid, but with several features and special elements already filled in.

Map Modifications

  • Existing Terrain: the easiest one, and the only one at the start. Some terrain is already filled in, which gives a nice starting point + random restrictions already.
  • Point Change: simply adds/removes points, or doubles/halves.
  • Terrain Options: Forbidden/Required Terrain
  • Disable Rules: disables the usual rules for placement/scoring for whatever you place here.
  • Pick Next: next turn, pick your terrain yourself, instead of rolling the die.
  • Min/Max Group Size: at time of placement, the terrain must be part of a group below/above the given size
  • Relic Capture: a special location. If surrounded completely by terrains, you capture the Relic … which gives some neat bonusses/moves you along a track? (At the very least, place 1 or 2 terrains of choice immediately?)

Terrains

  • Water: must be placed adjacent to Water, but can only be connected to 2 Water tiles at most. You score the length of your longest river. Any city connected to another city through your longest river has its points doubled.
  • Grass: can be placed anywhere. Scores +1 point.
  • Tree: must be placed adjacent to a Tree, if possible. Scores +2 points, but only if part of a Forest of size 6(+).
  • Town: must be placed adjacent to Water or Grain. Scores 0 points by itself, but +1 point for every adjacent Town.
  • Mountains: no part of the map may ever be completely encircled or cut off by mountains. Only Water/Grass is allowed in a mountain’s shadow. Scores +1 point.
  • Grain: can only be adjacent to a City with a smaller size than its Farm. Scores +2 points.

NOTE: Cartographers has this Monster terrain. Should I have some wildcard/weird seventh one too? => Each player loses one reputation star for each empty space adjacent to a monster space on their map, writing that number in the corresponding box.
