Fairytale Forest

This idea is basically “Werewolves”, but what if it was cooperative and it was everyone against the werewolves?

Rethemed as players being popular fairy tale characters, living inside the same fairytale forest.

I would love for this game to be entirely based on cards/tiles, nothing else.

  • Each role is just a unique set of cards/tiles.
  • Even the role card (which can move to others to “stay at their place”, for example) is just one of those.

Setup

Each player picks a unique (asymmetric) role. They receive all their cards/tiles, including one with an overview of how their turn works.

Objective

If any player dies, you lose. If you go through the entire werewolf deck (“monster deck”) before that happens, you win.

Gameplay

The game alternates between DAY and NIGHT phase.

During the day, players execute their role.

  • Each role has a unique number => handle the roles sorted low to high (based on these numbers)
  • Most roles will allow playing, removing, rotating some cards. (As you slowly build up defenses or better future actions.)
  • And possibly helping or involving others.

During the night, reveal the next X cards of the monster deck. (Where X is the number of players, or the round number (so it increases each night), or whatever.)

They will be attracted to certain houses and do a certain kind of damage.

Characters + Monsters

This is obviously where the meat of the game will be.

A major mechanic should be staying at another player’s place. If you are weakened, you can try to be able to take this action and stay with another player for the night.

Another major mechanic is how monsters choose targets and what they do with them.

  • They may be attracted to certain goods.
  • They may be attracted specifically by certain roles/a category of roles.
  • They may be non-lethal (simply destroying defenses, before a potentially stronger monster is handled) or lethal.
  • They may be swept aside, pushed to a neighbor house, etcetera.

(This opens the door to competitive play, in which you try to steer the monsters to kill your neighbors first. But then player elimination is a real thing and so this shouldn’t be the base game.)
