Stand-up Theatre

There’s a stage in the middle of the table. Around that stage is a large number of chairs: those need to be filled!

Setup

Players receive different types of theatregoers in their hands. Each one has their own requirements, ways of scoring, special rules, etc.

Objective

The game ends as soon as all seats have been filled.

At the end of the game, you want to have placed these people into seats such that you score the most points!

Gameplay

  • During the game, you may claim rows and columns. (Each row/column can only be claimed by one player. Claiming takes effort, or you can only do it 3 times per game.)
  • You only score people on those rows and columns at the end of the game. (Instead of instantly scoring people by their placement on your turn, which would probably be messier and need more material.)

Why would this work great?

  • You’re collectively filling that theatre (with quick, easy turns) …
  • … usually placing things optimally, but not necessarily …
  • While at the same time trying to find the perfect time to snatch the perfect row/column.

(Though, of course, we can still add people or mechanisms that score a tiny reward when placing them.)

Another action might be … changing the SHOW being performed. (Which allows changing the score on a large number of people at once, even after they already found their seat.) This way, you have two possible tracks/strategies to go for in this game.

Other Ideas

Have a queue outside of the theatre. It shows the people coming up, you can change the order of the queue a little bit, and this gives you more ways to play tactically and look into the future.

You can also move someone after seating them, but this has a high cost. It can only be done once or twice before that person does not score any more points or leaves entirely. Maybe you even have to pay them for the inconvience of moving.

Original name when the idea was still written in Dutch: “Op het puntje van je stoel”. Inspired by the game “Showtime”.
