King of Vi"

A Viking-themed boardgame. Below is a summary of the core idea, then a full rules description.

There are a few typical Viking (long)boats on the table.

  • They contain “slots” (on top of the graphic or below) for Viking tokens.
  • They are of varying lengths ( = varying number of slots)
    • (Some slots, especially later ones, can have extra benefits or actions when you place there.)
  • And you can place an “Island” (or “Destination”) card at their front.
    • Cards already start with a “default island”, both to simplify the game and to indicate this. Its rewards are meager, though, so you’ll probably replace it with a new Island anyway.

Each turn, players will be placing their tokens into empty slots, trying to send the boats to the best islands and get rewards.

The Score Cards should just say something like.

  • Resource = worth X points.
  • Resource = worth the number of Viking icons you have left (colored or neutral)
  • Resource = worth the number of boats you scored / slots on boats you scored
  • Resource = worth 5 points if you have no resource Y, otherwise 1.

Setup

Each player picks a unique Viking and gets all their tokens. (EXPANSION = + each player gets 3 random neutral tokens?)

Draw X Boat Cards and place them open on the table.

Draw a random Score Card and place it in clear view of everyone.

Objective

The game ends once all boats have sailed.

Your Score Card shows how each resource scores. Sum your points based on that. Highest score wins!

Gameplay

From start player, take clockwise turns until done.

On your turn, place a Viking token (of yours). Place it on a boat, in the first empty slot from the left.

  • If you cover up an action slot, take that action.
  • If you have the majority, you “own” the boat. You may change its Island card to a different one. (Optional: one from HAND, or MARKET, or within certain range of POINTS to prevent wild differences?)
  • If the boat is full, it sets sail to its Island!

When a boat sails away,

  • Sort the players by how many Vikings they have inside this boat, highest to lowest.
  • Its Island card tells you which rewards you get. (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Other.)
  • (When tied, both players get that same reward.)

Possible rewards are:

  • More vikings (your color or neutral)
  • The boat itself
  • The Island itself
  • Actual resource tokens (money, food, etc.)

More Ideas

@IDEA (BASE): The neutral Vikings have a set of 1–5 unique faces with actions attached. For example, if you play neutral A to a slot, you get to kick out another Viking

@IDEA (EXPANSION): Some slots have requirements, like “can only place a neutral token inside here”. (Which means the expansion also needs a way to overrule this/sail boats that aren’t full/CHANGE BOATS.)

@IDEA (EXPANSION):

  • Accidents during the journey.
  • Islands that defend themselves.
  • Multiple boats going to the same islands?
  • Players add/play boats themselves, instead of starting with fixed collection?
  • “Capture” other Vikings (and allow other colors as reward tokens?)
