Each player is running some miniature zoo or farm. Basically, I wanted a much faster and more simplified version of Zoo Tycoon, in abstract board game form.
Setup
On the table is a market of animals.
Gameplay
Take clockwise turns. On your turn, either attract animals or release animals.
Attract
You take from that market in the center of the table. The rule?
- Either take all animals of the same type.
- Or all cards with the same number.
You can only attract groups for which you have the necessary requirements. (For example, if there are 4 pigs, but you can only house 3 of them, you simply can’t take them.)
Release
- Release all animals with the same type or the same number.
- You execute the action of one of those animals, but the action’s “strength” is given by the number of cards you release.
(Followup idea: you can also pay for your action by drawing X cards from the market and adding them, basically adding options for all other players, but it doesn’t cost you anything. In that case, you “release” animals from … their cages?)
General Rules
In general,
- There’s an exhibit card.
- Each animal requires 1 or 2 exhibits. (So when you get that animal, you must swap it with one exhibit card. Exhibits are lost after doing so.)
- Some animals also require something else, like a specific food, or they can’t be placed in the same exhibit as other animals.
This means your general moves in this game will be …
- Create a few exhibits with plenty of space. (One huge exhibit isn’t great as it won’t allow animals together, all tiny exhibits also isn’t great because you don’t get the BONUSES for animals being together? Or there’s an upper limit on the number of exhibits?)
- Remember, an “exhibit” is just a bunch of exhibit cards in a row/rectangle.
- When the time is right, grab a bunch of animals that will fill those exhibits.
This is somewhat related to my Zooperation idea.
