This whole idea is based on a misunderstanding (by me) of the rules for “Captain of the Gulf”. I like it.
Setup
The board is a set of oceans and lakes. (Or one ocean divided into areas.) These are filled with FISH tokens. => These boards can be randomly generated, a printed A4.
Each player has one boat, which starts at any space on the edge.
Gameplay
By default, you get 5 actions. However, for every 2 tokens currently on your ship, you lose 1 action.
The possible actions are MOVE or FISH. At the end of your turn, always REPOPULATE.
Move
Sail to an area adjacent to your current area.
The edges of the ocean have special locations. These trigger when you visit the area.
- Storehouse: load your cargo off your ship. (The tokens go from faceup in front of you, to facedown inside your score pile.)
- Shipyard: pay the tokens shown to buy an extra power. (These tokens may come from your ship or from your score pile)
- Faster movement, may repopulate with any token, may fish the whole area even when it’s not full, …
Fish
You can only fish in your current area.
You may grab 1 token from the area, or dump 1 token there (from your ship).
If there are no MINUS tokens, however,
- All tokens inside the area are transferred to your ship. (Place them faceup in front of you.)
- Put back equally many MINUS tokens.
Repopulate
In all areas, replace one MINUS token with a token of a type shown inside the area. (Some areas will always repopulate with fish, others can contain treasure, or trash, etcetera.)
Expansions
I’d be tempted to move those “special locations” you can visit to an expansion, but I actually think they’re crucial to the base game.
Similarly, there might be special AREAS. (A different rule is written within the area.) Use one or two really easy ones for the base game, leave the harder ones for the expansion. * A max size for areas perhaps also makes sense.
Similarly, I’d like to add more tokens (besides FISH and MINUS), like trash/treasure/other stuff you might find in the sea. It would add complexity, but it would probably make the base game much better.
The more likely expansion would be WATER FLOW.
- During REPOPULATION: Move one token (can’t be a minus) from each area to an adjacent area, following the arrows (“water flow”).
- During MOVEMENT: Moving against the water flow counts as moving 2 spaces.
