About a “rough neighborhood”, with kids slowly being radicalized to become more extreme/join a gang.
But there are one or more people in that neighborhood who actually look out for them and keep them out of gangs/trouble.
They think it’s just coincidence and that those are good people … until they learn the police purposely planted them there because it’d be much more effective and controlling the situation than putting police officers in.
This causes them to believe their entire relationship/friendship has always been a “lie” and makes them do something stupid in the moment.
Include the idea of “Gang Databases” from the Last Week Tonight segment.
