The Fallen Barriers of Burnbank

This is a combination of three ideas. It’s all based on the idea of Dungeons & Dragons, but with the actual rules being part of a magical world, instead of an abstraction of realistic concepts.

IDEA 1: A world with strong classism because humans evolved in slightly different ways. Long ago, humans were all one species. But some event drove them apart, forced us to evolve differently, until now (in the present time) the species converged once more.

This means you have some people with horns, some with tails, some who grow much shorter or longer than others, etcetera. Obviously, society has decided to “allow” this but clearly create a ranking, where some species are far better than others.

IDEA 1.5: In an effort to FIX racism/classism, people added a magic that completely REMOVES all forms of identification. For example, people’s faces change all the time, hair changes color as it grows longer, fingerprints don’t exist/change, etcetera.

This same magic system leads to a world where everyone should be judged SOLELY on their skills/merits, as the idea below continues …

IDEA 2: Hidden magical skill checks. Everyone in this world has innate properties (such as Strength = 10, Speed = 6), and everything in this world has a hidden/random skill check. You can only pass through that door if your skill check has enough strength. You can only talk with this person if your Language/Intelligence is high enough. And so forth.

This is interesting and reinforces the classism. There is some randomness there (each property also has a VARIANCE that can be different from person to person; so like a normal distribution around value X, with variance swings of Y).

Many storylines are about finding out the skill check, making sure they surpass it, or trying to manipulate that.

IDEA 3: Worldbuilding based on that John Oliver video about “West Bank”. In other words:

  • People of “lower class” are assigned areas they may live/work, but can’t go anywhere else.
  • Nets are placed over entire markets/blocks to prevent others from throwing trash downwards on them.
  • Their homes are destroyed because they were supposedly “illegally built”
  • Higher classes have a mentality of “well clearly this hill isn’t used, so nobody owns it, so now I own it”
  • Cameras and machine guns are everywhere, on a swivel, following those of “lower class” with special targeting algorithms to identify their unique features. (Which obviously leads to many people HIDING those outward features that would classify their race. Because the humans are still SIMILAR enough that you can actually do this. Which spawned an entire branch of magic/clothing to hide this better—and magic/cameras to see through it better.)

@IDEA (STORY): That thing about like 50% of people having Gengis Khan’s genes/have him as an ancestor. More specifically, a world in which 1 or 2 HUGE CONQUERERS went on a conquest, conquered 3/4 of the world, impregnated all the women, and that’s why everyone these days has their genes/them as ancestor. More specifically, the traits of these conquerers are hence bred into everyone over time. (Maybe one of them had only one functioning eye, or one of them was extremely aggressive and competitive, or one of them had purple hair somehow, and now such things are just the natural thing for 50% of people in the world.)
