The Impatients

The Idea

This idea is about a (fantasy/alt-futuristic) world with three interesting rules. Each one might be enough for its own story entirely, but I’ve kept them together because they’re related and would make some nice storylines within the same universe.

  • There are two worlds: the real one and the imaginary. Crucially, these are perfect mirrors. If something isn’t possible in the real world, then by definition it IS possible in the imaginary one. A danger that does not exist in the real world DOES exist in the imaginary one. => So, all dangers you can “imagine”, actually appear and are real here.
  • Humans have evolved to not need any sleep. What would live look like? How would society have developed differently? How would we look at day and night then?
  • Humans have a symbiotic relationship with other creatures. We literally can’t survive without them, and they can’t survive without us. We developed this way and as such it’s completely normal to have this creature with you all the time, to sleep with it, to be forced to work for it, etcetera.

That second rule creates a weird paradox in society.

  • Society has become exceptionally slow. Humans stopped sleeping because they stopped doing anything—over the years, sleeping less and less was acceptable and fine, until the predominent gene lost the ability to sleep.
  • Society has become exceptionally hasty and rushed. Because nobody needs to sleep, there is no reset point, no cutting time into days. So everyone is impatient, and rushed, and time is just one continuous stream of stuff that needs to be done.

There are a few left with the genes to still sleep. But those are cast aside, treated as bad actors and anomalies, frowned upon.

Could this be Romantasy?

NOTE: The font pinkend feels ideal for this kind of story.

NOTE: I moved the “Tot ik uitgeput direct zal dromen” idea here as well. See underneath this section. The quote/sentiment is a great central theme, and there weren’t really many specifics to the idea anyway. So merge the ideas.

Tot ik uitgeput meteen zal dromen (NL)

(“Until exhaustion hastens me to dreams”)
