Butterfly Bandits

It’s just a game about catching butterflies.

It’s 3D. Butterflies (or other insects) fly around through the environment. (Could be fixed levels, could be randomly generated with some simple water + vegetation.)

All players have this big net to catch them with.

Your only job is to catch the right ones (and not catch the wrong ones).

  • This could be cooperative: reach a certain goal, or fulfill a “recipe” of things to catch
  • This could be competitive: score the most points within the time limit.

But it should be a really simple game. Basic (low-poly?) 3D environments. Characters that walk and jump, with a net sticking out at a certain side.

The net feels most useful if it sticks out horizontally, as then you can catch things nicely by rotating around.

Some insect powers might displace your net, though?

Players might also be butterfly-like-creatures themselves. Or maybe that’s too much.

Notes:

  • Different insects fly in different patterns. Some are more floaty swirly like Butterflies. Others are chaotic, like wasps. Some are fast, some are slow. Some land on branches, some don’t. (Are there are also non-flying insects to catch? Seems to break the pattern too much.)
  • Different insects have different rules or powers. When caught, they might activate in some way. Maybe certain insects can not be combined within your net: you need to empty/clean/release first.
    • Example: an insect that releases a gas/poison/smoke bomb
    • Example: an insect that, when caught, allows you to fly for a bit.
    • In general, catching an insect changes how you play from that moment until the next thing you catch.
