Batteryball

Simplified soccer where players are a battery. (Just an upright 3D cylinder, perhaps with arms/legs/face.)

  • Recharge your energy by picking up stuff around the field.
  • Press a button to use your charge and go supersonic.

Your current energy level is displayed inside you. (With thick disks stacking on top each other, like the usual battery icon.)

Normally, moving is very slow, but also doesn’t drain/require energy.

But you can press a button!

  • This gives you superspeed
  • And activates any powerup you have at the moment
  • But quickly drains energy => once depleted, the powerup stops, and you can’t move at all.

Objective

Score more goals than the opponent in the given time.

Input

Moving + One Button

Game Rules

Supersonice

Rule #1: Supersonic. Hold your button to use your charge and go supersonic. (You move faster, hit the ball faster, etcetera.)

The more energy you have, the more pronounced this effect is, and the longer you can stay in it of course.

When going fast, you can bump others. When going top speed, walking into them destroys them.

Charging

Rule #2: Charging. Going supersonic depletes your charge. Each map has different ways to recharge yourself: pick up something, stand somewhere, etcetera.

However, if you overcharge (more than 120% for example), you explode.

Exploding

Rule #3: Exploding. When you explode, your corpse stays behind where you are. It becomes a “special attraction” for some time. (For example, it attracts the ball when it comes near.)

You respawn at fixed spawn points after a few seconds.

Map

Rule #4: All other special elements go through the map. Parts of the floor might have a specific terrain that does something to you (when walking over it). Goals are different. Shapes are different. There might be other obstacles. Other ways to recharge. Other outlets for your energy.

But there are no other buttons, no powerups, no other systems to explain or use.

Referee

Rule #5: Referee. If you bump into the referee, it’s a foul. Other bumps/explosions/events might also be fouls, but that depends on the energy level of the referee.

A foul means your energy is drained? Your whole team is drained? The other team is completely filled? A set piece?

Multiple Batteries?

Rule #6 (Idea): Each player has multiple characters. (Maybe only on low player counts.) Pressing another button shuts one off and activates the other. The one that’s shut off automatically recharges.

(Switching might also be done using a different method: standing somewhere, hitting each other, whatever.)

Other Ideas

IDEA: We can use the “battery/energy” theme much more. We should do that.

  • Stand on top of each other to share your energy
  • Electrical outlets mounted in the field where you can plug yourself in
    • Maybe we can use physics electric cords to attach you to stuff, and these break loose if you get to far away?

Can you take/give (kinetic) energy to the ball on purpose? Feels thematic, but don’t know where that would fit. => Unless I make this depend on where/how the ball hits you!

  • Might be specific sections of the map that do this. If the ball hits you there, it drops dead and gives all its energy to you.
  • Alternatively, any hit might drain all your energy and completely transfer it into the ball.

Inspired by Lethamyr’s video, where you’re only allowed to move as long as you have a Rumble powerup, once you’ve exhausted it (and the timer runs) you can’t move anymore.
